Pune Handmade Papers, a revamped brand belonging to the Handmade Paper Institute (HMPI) Pune, is an initiative under the Maharashtra State Khadi & Village Industries Board are the pioneers in manufacturing eco-friendly handmade paper in India since the past 80 years.

This renowned institute the brainchild of Mahatma Gandhi and scientist KB Joshi and was officially inaugurated in August 1940 by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. The intent was to introduce the method of paper making out of waste material and strengthen the economy and employment to the Khadi & Village Industries thereby improving livelihoods.

Interestingly the first true copy of the Constitution of India by Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar was drafted on paper which was specially made by HMPI; the official letter heads of Indian bureaucrats to even the personal letter heads of the President & Prime minister and even wedding card of Rajiv Gandhi with Sonia Gandhi were printed on these papers. Till date the official folders, registers, and legal stationary is prepared here.

To address the needs of changing times, HMPI has been re-establised under the brand name of Pune Handmade Papers, under the new management of one of India’s leading design firm - Studio Mars. By weaving in the combination of design thinking and evolving sustainable global market needs; the aim is to manifest the beauty of rustic handmade paper & retrieve this hand crafted art by developing a wide range of contemporary artistic papers & paper products that represent the fusion of the ethnic and minimalism.

Located in the heart of the city at Shivaji Nagar with a rich cover of trees next to the landmark of Agriculture College; Pune’s ever-changing culture has left a unique imprint on the history of this iconic institute. By undertaking the challenge to ensure this rich hertitage site should be preserved and valued, we have reopened its doors with an impressive showroom and gallery as a sustainable cultural hub. We are encouraging various ecofriendly workshops and events for schools, supporters and all citizens. Pune airport is 20 minutes away and upscale residential areas of Model Colony, Pune University, Aundh and Koregoan Park within 4km radius.

We strive to deliver world class sustainable paper and products by adapting the best practices with a blend of traditional and modern techniques. It is our mission to promote the fact that handmade paper manufactured is completely eco-friendly and made by recycling waste materials like various types of cotton, jute, mill waste and is 100% wood-free. Our motto of ‘save our trees-use handmade paper’ not only encourages a sustainable way of living. The entire manufacturing process is completely eco-friendly and consumes miniumum electricity thereby reducing environmental pollution.
